New Zealand Mānuka Group Wins Innovation in Export Award

New Zealand Mānuka Group is abuzz after winning two coveted Export Awards.  Recognised for their incredible achievements and focus on innovation, Export BOP judges named New Zealand Mānuka Group this year’s winner of the Page Mcrae Engineering Innovation in Export Award.

The Innovation in Export award recognises Bay of Plenty businesses displaying outstanding innovation in exporting. The winner must illustrate how innovative strategies and practices have contributed to exporting success.

Judges were particularly impressed with New Zealand Mānuka Group’s “matrix of innovative science, an ethos of environmental sustainability and smart investment in know-how and people capability.”

“New Zealand Mānuka Group is connecting local communities and their natural resources with customers and consumers worldwide for highly differentiated, highly prized, natural essential oils and health products that are uniquely New Zealand,” the judges explained.

Innovation is nothing new for the business which began on this path in the ‘90s when Phil Caskey created and patented the first medical device product made from pharmaceutical grade Manuka honey.

“Today, New Zealand Mānuka Group is continuing this evolution of innovation through identifying the triketones compound found in East Cape Mānuka oil,” says company founder, Phil Caskey.  “There is a real and pressing need for natural healthcare options now that we are running out of antibacterial compounds, as bacteria becomes resistant to most modern synthetic pharmaceutical products.”

The registration of the MβTK™ (Mānuka oil beta triketones) mark is another recent innovation which was established to provide credibility to the antibacterial properties in Mānuka oil as well as providing measurable, quantifiable evidence with regard to the potency and efficacy of the triketone compound.

Ever humble, Phil Caskey is the first to pass credit to the support of the wider team and in particular to the landowners and local communities where the Mānuka plantations are being developed, “Without their support and efforts none of this would be possible.”

CEO, Karl Gradon, agrees that recognition for the achievement is something everyone at New Zealand Mānuka Group can be very proud of, “Winning the Innovation Award for our MBTK oils is a wonderful achievement and a credit to everyone here.”
